Penn Law’s Persecution of Professor Amy Wax Is Textbook Leftist Intolerance

Matthew Lynch
Education

The recent decision by the University of Pennsylvania Law School to censure Professor Amy Wax for her controversial statements is a chilling example of the intolerant, illiberal climate that has taken hold on many college campuses. While Wax’s views on immigration and race are undeniably provocative, her punishment is not only unjust but also sets a dangerous precedent for academic freedom.

Penn Law’s justification for the censure – that Wax’s statements create a “hostile learning environment” – is a flimsy and overused excuse to silence dissenting voices. The very notion that students are so fragile that they cannot handle differing opinions is itself a threat to the intellectual foundation of higher education.

It is important to note that Wax has not been accused of harassment or discrimination. Her “crime” is simply holding unpopular views. This is precisely the type of thought policing that should be condemned. Universities, particularly law schools, should be sanctuaries for open debate and intellectual inquiry, where challenging and even controversial ideas can be freely discussed.

The silencing of Professor Wax is not a victory for inclusivity; it is a defeat for academic freedom and a dangerous step towards intellectual conformity. By allowing their perceived political correctness to trump academic freedom, Penn Law is sending a clear message: dissent is unwelcome, and critical thinking is discouraged. This is not the mark of a university committed to truth and progress, but rather a chilling signal of a campus cowed by the demands of the woke mob.
