Oral Roberts University (ORU) is a Christian institution in Tulsa, Okla., that was started by Evanglist Oral Roberts. Its not uncommon for a professor to begin class with a prayer and, outside of class, learners can check out worship sessions on campus and mission trips away from Tulsa. Undergraduates under the age of 25 are required to live on the schools campus, unless they petition for commuter status. For those who do commute from in and around Tulsa, the university offers an online community for commuters to virtually connect with one another, find out about campus events, and get weekly updates on school news. Student athletes compete as the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, members of the NCAA Division I Summit League.
To encourage ethnic diversity, Oral Roberts teams up with the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and operates a year-round Hispanic Center on campus, which helps learners overcome language barriers and transition into college life. Oral Roberts University also offers a variety of graduate degrees through academic departments including the School of Education. Notable alumni of Oral Roberts University include Ryan Tedder, lead singer of the band OneRepublic, and television personality and Today Show cohost Kathie Lee Gifford.
