Founded by Jesuits in 1870, Canisius College is a private school in Buffalo, just a few miles from Lake Erie and the Canadian border. Undergraduate and graduate learners at Canisius College can choose from more than 125 majors, minors and special programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Richard J. Wehle School of Business and the School of Education and Human Services. Through the education school and its cooperation with St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, Canisius offers a deaf education master’s program, which is nationally recognized by the Council on Education of the Deaf.
Outside the classroom, Canisius learners can get involved by joining more than 100 campus organizations and trying out for the Canisius Golden Griffins varsity sports teams, which participate in the NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Notable Canisius College alumni include Edward Zubler, inventor of the halogen lamp, and basketball player Michael Smrek, who won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.
