Albany State University is a historically black school in the University System of Georgia. The school was started in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institution and eventually evolved into a four-year university. Notable alumni of Albany State University include civil rights activist Shirley Sherrod and actress Jo Marie Payton, who starred in the television show “Family Matters.”
